Question: how did they do the last step?

I was wondering the same thing - it's like a domino falling backwards and tipping the domino in front of it. Even the "Making Of" video doesn't explain it, although they seemed to talk about the difficulty of it. http://www.flixxy.com/tipping-point-making-of.htm

whoohoo! whoohoo! whoohoo! whoohoo!

I can see (maybe) how it could work for dominoes - if they were placed close enough end to end together, as a bottom domino fell, it would just brush the bottom end of the domino above it, causing it to turn?

I tried to see if there were any hints at http://www.dominodomain.com/ but so far have only seen that Exclamation Arrow TOMORROW look left Exclamation is Domino Day 2007

The gallery of Domino Day projects is only still shots. I'd love to see them in action!!

I just googled for domino videos and found these:

Here are excerpts from Domino Day 2006:

After watching "The Making Of" it is clear that they filmed a whole series of "domino" sequences separately and then edited them together. That's no big surprise as it's how all movies are made. I assume that the end sequence is either a computer-generated effect (based on the fact that they show it being constructed on a computer) or, if they did build a giant glass from books, then the cascade was top-down and then the film was reversed.

I saw that they had filmed it separately, but hadn't even considered that they might have cheated and filmed that sequence backwards! How deflating.

I still think the whole thing is cool and get the impression that everthing could have been set up to be filmed done in one take (except perhaps the glass) if they had wanted to do that....

Be very very careful if you choose the link on the above to "see the Masterplan of Domino Day 2007" - it's a pdf! (Oooooh, I HATE it when there is no text warning that a link goes to a pdf file stomp)

Here is a video of one of the teams (Hungarian RTL Television) setting up dominoes. (warning: the first part is a bit lame but the part showing them actually setting up dominoes is interesting)

This dragon looks like it might be cool:

Another part of the dragon:

and I like the look of this tree too:
