I loved this movie - everything seemed just right. It has a 98% (!) rating on Rotten Tomatoes http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/once/)

We found the Irish accents were sometimes a bit hard to understand, so we turned on the English subtitles on the DVD.

Spoiler, don't read until after you see it.
Spoiler (highlight to read):
On one of the extras on the DVD, the director says that people ask him about what happened to the characters after filming, because they think it's a documentary. He, and the actor-musicians, are proud that the film gives that impression.

"Once" is
Spoiler (highlight to read):
a 'musical' unlike the Broadway kind. Musicians communicate chiefly through their own songs. It's
a wonderful bittersweet film that all should have look at.

edit: I moved part of MEF's post into spoiler mode (personally, I like to know NOTHING about a movie before seeing it. All I ever really want to know is if it is a comedy or tragedy and that's not even that important.... stomp

I know. I'm weird.)

Thanks for the recommendation! We'll look for it at our video rental store.

What a satisfying movie! Many thanks for the recommendation!

And you're right the Irish accents were sometimes hard to understand - especially at the very beginning. We're STILL not sure what was said by the two people in the opening sequence (we didn't turn on the subtitles and had to take the DVD back without taking the opportunity to look at that section again.
