I loved "Lost in Translation"! and didn't find it at all yawn worthy.
I haven't seen "Irreconcilable Differences" so can't say whether I disagree on that score as well. However, that movie doesn't seem to feature Clooney. Do you mean "Intolerable Cruelty"? Haven't seen that either, but I'm not a huge fan of George Clooney after snoring through "Ocean's Eleven" and "The Perfect Storm". I only made it through about 10 minutes of "Three Kings" before walking out. But I did like "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" - maybe that was because of the music, which was brilliant.

Whoops, I was relying on Someone Else in our family to give me the name of the awful Clooney movie. I agree that Ocean's Eleven was dreadful, as well as "A Perfect Storm." "I liked Oh Brother Where Art Thou" and I actually think Clooney added to this one. It isn't just the music -- the plot and the Ulysses references are also wonderful.

I just came back from a bus trip to Paris and was subjected to several movies en route. A couple of terrible ones were Cinderella 2 and Doctor Doolittle 2. I also saw the animated version of Sinbad which I tried to sleep through. Johnny English was a mediocre film punctuated by some slapstick where I laughed despite myself. By the time Batman and Robin was shown I was ready to jump out of the window and Peter Pan very really pushed me over the edge. Maybe I'll type up the highlights/lowlights of my trip and post it here. I seem to be getting a feeling of deja vu.

I was strangely disappointed in "Love Actually" despite Liam Neeson and a very charming kid who gave it all they were worth, and despite Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman who were both wonderful as usual. And two quite brilliant cameos by Rowan Atkinson who while pushing the limit, did not, for once, go over the top. But not nearly enough of Hugh Grant, and far too much of some others. By trying to do too much, it became disjointed and uneven.

I too was quite disappointed in "Love Actually". I thought the opening was very promising but then it went somewhat downhill. (editor's note: please highlight between the dotted lines to see the almost spoiler)

The story featuring Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson was okay. But the one about the young guy going to America was truly dumb. And Hugh Grant as PM and Billy Bob Thornton as the President of US was just too much suspension of disbelief.
We saw it on DVD so I watched the deleted scenes. I was sorry that some of them had been deleted and other fluffier ones had not (such as all the ones featuring Hugh Grant).

The thing that truly amazed me though was hearing Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now". We were trying to guess who could possibly be singing such a strange cover of the song. I guessed Cleo Laine because of the smoky quality of her voice. (My second guess was Wayne Newton.) But it was Mitchell doing a re-cover of her song these eons later. Maybe I'm a purist but I really think the original version was much stronger.
