Welcome to my self-hosted forum - please read

discussions about dinner and any other descriptions of food and/or recipes, travel, bicycling, gardening, books, movies, weather, art, web design, philosophy, music, natural disasters, television... either reply to an existing discussion or start a new one. I think that's everything. So please, let's get to it... discuss away! (Please note that any posts I consider to be off-topic will be deleted. For clarification, take a look at my discussion guidelines.)

Welcome to my self-hosted forum - please read

Post by llizard (aka ejm) »

edit June 2014: This forum is now closed and remains as a read-only archive.

Many thanks for coming into this forum.

If you are having registration problems, please go to the thread entitled 'For those with registration problems'.

I hope that everything is running correctly and that you can stomach this new format. I don't yet know how to allow a change over to a threaded style like the Bravenet ad-studded forum we have been using before this. (It may be a very long time before I do - I'm still working out a few kinks with this one.) I hope you can all live with this version - I reckon it's worth it to be free of those invasive ads.

Anyone is able to read messages in my phpbb forum. Only registered users can post. Registered users can also edit and delete their own posts.

It is a simple matter to register. All that is required is your user name and an email address. If you choose to register, you must use a legitimate email address. The primary reason is that you must be able to receive the email giving instructions on how to enable your account. The secondary reason is that if you lose your password, I have no way to retrieve it. If you want your email address to remain hidden, please go into your profile and check the "no" button for the line marked "Always show my e-mail address:". Please note that I will not publish these addresses nor will I distribute them (I loathe and despise spam). But I strongly suggest that you use a special address just for online things. If you do not yet have such an address, there are several online companies that offer free email addresses - care2.com, Yahoo!, etc. etc.

Please do ask for features that you would like to see here. I might just say "get real" but there is no harm in asking.

I especially encourage discussions about food and recipes, bicycle travel, gardening, books and films. Take a look at the index and reply to an existing discussion, or start a new one. Any posts I consider to be off-topic will be deleted without notice.

Occasionally, you may want to type a spoiler when posting about a movie or book. In that case, please make sure that BBcode is enabled.

Type the text that you want to be hidden. Highlight the text, and then hit the spoiler button that appears above the posting window (or hit "alt+r"). You will see:

Code: Select all

[spoiler]text that is to be hidden[/spoiler]
Here is what will appear in the forum:
[spoiler]text that is to be hidden[/spoiler]

Here is a page with the complete forum guidelines. Either reply to an existing discussion or start a new one.

I hope to see you here often and look forward to reading your posts.

-llizard

(Thanks to blm for the tip on using the spoiler button)

WOW! What a big change; this is very cool. And like you say, all these features. My Google Bar fought back tons of pop-ups on the old forum but tons still got through. I hope all the old gang sign up.

Glad you like it MEF. Almost everyone has come here now. We're only missing David, meow, msh210 and a couple of people who used to come into the starblvd version.

changes to registration process

Post by llizard (aka ejm) »

Because I was having problems with unwelcome robots registering, I had to add an extra step to the registration process. There is now even more reason to use a legitimate e-mail address. Once you have registered, a message will be sent to you with instructions on how to activate your account so that you can post.

If you are having problems with this, please post to the thread in the For Test Posting forum

Please note that your name will NOT appear on the registered members list until you have activated your account.

Well, rats. Because of having to erase several :stinks: robots':stinks: posts today, I have now had to change the permissions for the forum. Anyone can read the forum but now only registered users can post.

If the robots manage to register (which in time they will, I'm sure), I will not only be removing those posts but any replies to those posts as well. :lalala:

If you are having registration problems, please go to the thread entitled 'For those with registration problems'.
